One of my best friends Christian McCulloch also happens to be Emma Stone’s make-up artist. I absolutely loved her look at last weeks Critics Choice Awards – the loose, textured, up-do, the metallic Balenciaga gown – she was my favourite starlet on the carpet – so I rang Christian and asked him to share what he did/what he used.

Skin.

“Emma is young with good healthy skin. It literally glows. On the red carpet it’s about looking good in photographs which means you need coverage that lasts under award show lights and then through to the after parties. I like to use foundation with a bit of grunt – one that mops up shine but still allows the skin breathe. Make-Up Forever is the perfect all rounder. Use your fingers or a sponge to blend from the nose outward. You don’t need to take foundation to the hairline you just need to blend really well – no tide marks!”

“Next, I used Chanel Soleil Tan. It’s a liquid which means you can control the amount of colour and put the bronzer exactly where you want it to go. It doesn’t get stuck like a powder and keeps everything looking dewy and fresh”.

Eyes.

“My favourite liner for blondes is a chocolate brown by M.A.C called Teddy. It’s the perfect shade – not too harsh. Black can overwhelm a lot of faces and close down the shape of your eyes. I used it on the inner rim and then blended colour onto the lids using the Christian Dior Eyeshadow Palette in Crush Glow. No eye make-up is complete without mascara. My favourite is Lancome Definicils Mascara – the blacker the better and the more coats the merrier”.

NOTE: I have been addicted to MAC Teddy Liner for years – since Christian first used it one me. Below I am straight off a plane and out to a Broadway show. No base, no bronzer, no lipstick – just Teddy. It’s a winner.

Cheeks.

“Most woman look best with a peachy, slightly orange flush on their cheeks. It makes you look healthy and more awake. I blended M.A.C Cream Blush in Lilicent into the apples of her cheeks and then contoured up toward the temples with M.A.C Powder Blush in Dainty. The big rule with blush is to not over-do it. Far better to start with less and build up slowly.

Lips.

“She only needed a slick of lip balm. The eyes, her skin, that hair, the dress – there was enough in the total package. She has a great shape to her mouth, so we just made sure they looked well moisturised – not glossy – just slick.”
